Abstract The present study adds to the body of literature on the relation between language and intercultural competence. Specifically, it aims at investigating intercultural competence as a factor potentially influencing speaking skill among secondary school students. This took place through designing a program based on Intercultural Communicative Approach (also called Ethnography-Based Approach) for developing speaking skill and improving intercultural competence among secondary school students. Thus, two classes were selected at random and assigned into an experimental and control groups, +, students in each group. -ar.cipants of the experimental group were taught the training program whereas the control group received no training. -re-post speaking tests and intercultural competence scales were prepared and administered. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using the t-test. Results confirmed the effectiveness of the program in developing speaking skill and intercultural competence among first year secondary school students. Results also confirmed the existence of a high correlation between intercultural competence and speaking skill, which implies that developing either one results in the other’s development. Accordingly, relevant pedagogical implications and suggestions for further research were discussed. |
