Abstract

Background: Several health hazards including communicable diseases and skin conditions are associated with barbers’ profession to which their visitors are exposed. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of an educational intervention on infection control practices among barbers in rural areas in Monufia. Design: A quasi experimental pre-post and follow up tests were used. Setting: The study was conducted on the rural villages of two districts from menoufia governorate selected randomly by simple random sample Sample: A simple random sample of 179 barbers was selected. They divided into study group comprised of 92 barbers and control group comprised of 87 barbers. Tools: The study used three tools include: constructed interviewing questionnaire which cover three parts of Personal characteristics, Awareness and knowledge about health hazards linked with barbering and reported practices. The second tool was a developed observational checklist and the third tool was the application of Health Belief Model variables. An educational intervention was developed and implemented to participants to improve their knowledge and practices regarding infection control at their shops. Results: The study findings revealed that there was significant improvement in the mean knowledge scores of the study group, which were 63.68 after intervention compared with 34.60 pre intervention. Additionally the present study revealed that there was high statistical significant improvement of the total practices of the study group post intervention with mean of 4.82 compared with pre intervention with mean of 1.11. Conclusion: Educational intervention using Health Belief Model can be effective in improving barbers’ knowledge and practices regarding infection prevention at their shops as they come in contact with all dynamic classes of the community. Recommendations: Further studies are recommended that work on raising awareness of the general population (barbers’ clients) about measures to prevent infection at barbershops.
