Abstract

Quantitative measurements of tumor response rate by three methods ( Medical Method , Triangle Manual Method and Philips Method ) used to measure tumor volumes using applications for processing and displaying medical images in Digital imaging and Communication in medicine format ( DICOM ), such as the program Radiant DICOM Viewer and PHILIPS DICOM Viewer. We illustrated these methods on brain tumor volume cases using MR imaging modality. Recent histological correlation studies also showed that magnetic resonance (MR) imaging provides highly accurate measurements of the actual tumor volume. We could measure the tumor volume of two methods Medical Method and Triangle Manual Method by using also the program Radiant DICOM Viewer. The third method Philips Method using Philips DICOM Viewer could measure the tumor volume. In Triangle Manual Method become more realistic with the use of advanced technology imaging during therapy, especially when the tumor morphological changes remain subtle, irregular and difficult to assess by clinical examination. These quantitative measurements depend strongly on the accuracy of the segmentations methods used. Improvements on such methods yield to increase the accuracy of the segmentation process. Recently, the Philips Method using Philips DICOM Viewer could measure also the tumor volume. In this paper, the new automatic calculation of the volumetric size of brain tumor has been implemented based on Triangle Manual Method. A comparative study and statistical analysis performed in this work show that this method gives more accurate and better performance for one dimension volume measurements. The method population was tested by 15 fully investigated patients of different tumor type and shape, who were randomly selected from an ongoing treatment protocol conducted in Radio diagnosis Departments, Zagazig University Hospitals. Better accurate results were reported by using this method
