Abstract

Aim:To Assess and evaluate the effect of using laser acupuncture and needle acupuncture as a complementary modality in management of simple obesity, and suggesting the most suitable tools for overweight and obese patients.Subject and Methods:A 101 women with simple obesity aged between 18-45 years old,Body Mass Index> 25 and with waist circumference > 88 cm, were randomlydivided into four main groups:group 1were treated with Body Laser Acupuncture and Auricular Needle Acupuncture(BLAANA), group 2were treated with Body Laser Acupuncture BLA), group 3were treated with Body Needle Acupuncture and Auricular Needle Acupuncture(BNAANA)and group 4were treated with placebo (Sham) using activated (non-simulated) Laser acupuncture (PL).All subjects in the four groups won prescribed low calorie diet and physical training exercise programme all over the study course. The anthropometric measurements {Wt, Ht, WC, HC, WHR andskin fold thickness Biceps, Triceps, Subscapular, and Suprailiac)} for all subjects in four groups were assessed at the beginning of the study, after 4weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks. Bioelectrical Impedance Method was used to calculate and estimate the value of body mass index and body fat percentage. The laboratory investigations (Cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, serum Leptin and Haemoglobin) for all subjects in the four groups were assessed at the beginning of the study and after 12 weeks. Each subject inthe four groups had one session (13.5 minutes) per week of the different modalities for a total of twelve sessions over 12 weeks. Results:In the first three groups using body acupuncture therapy a statistically significant resultshad been observed in all the anthropometric and laboratory parameters in comparison with the results of the sham group. Laser Acupuncture group 1 and 2 resulted in a highly statisticalsignificantreduction in all anthropometric and laboratory measurements< 0.0001)all over the study periods (3months) in comparing to group 3 and 4. Conclusion:Among current modalities used for management of simple obesity body acupuncture therapy is effective. By using the unique noninvasive low-level laser irradiation.
