Abstract

Postpartum period is a significant transition in women’s lives and little is known about how
information needs change over time in the early postpartum period. The aim of this study was
to assess postpartum learning needs among women’s delivered at maternity university
hospital. A descriptive exploratory research design was utilized to achieve the study aim. A
total of 500 postpartum women were recruited for this study based on the following
inclusion criteria: immediate postpartum mothers, full term pregnancy, both Primiparous
and multiparous women, with different educational levels. Structured interviewing sheet
was developed by the researcher to collect the desired data .The tool includes two parts A)
first part composed of demographic data such as age, occupation and, level of education,
and obstetrical profile as parity and gravidity, as well as part two B) postpartum maternal
and newborn learning need. Results indicated that, 60% of the study sample their age
ranges between 20-30 years. 41% of women had secondary school education, Fivity four
point four percent 54.4% of the women residence in urban area and almost 99.8% of the
study sample was married. Fifty eight point four percent of women delivered by cesarean
section (CS) compared to41.6% of them delivered by vaginal delivery. According to
parity, 75% of women were multiparous, and 25%of women were Primiparous. The most
common learning need as preserved by the women during postpartum period were: danger
sings 78.1%, followed by postpartum exercise 75.6%, proper nutrition quality and quantity
74.7%, Lochia assessment 67.6%, compared to the last needs as perceived by the study
sample52.3% need to know about contraceptive methods. In relation to newborn learning
need as preserved by the women, the result shows that 99.6% of women reported their
needs to know newborn danger sings compared to 26% of them reported their needs to
understand the principles of weaning. Conclusion: maternal and newborn danger sings,
exercise, proper nutrition, Lochia assessment &care and proper contraceptive method
received the highest priority needs as reported by the women during postpartum period.
Recommendation: based on study finding women should receive information based on
their needs before they discharged from the hospital.
