Abstract Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are generally the result of invasion and multiplication of enteric bacteria in the wall of a hollow viscus or beyond. IAIs include many pathological conditions, ranging from uncomplicated appendicitis to complicated faecal peritonitis. Acute abdominal pain (AAP) is a main symptom of intra abdominal infections(IAIs). Most common causes of Intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) are acute appendicitis, acute cholecystitis, perforated peptic ulcer, acute pancreatitis and acute diverticulitis. This study included 541 patients with intra abdominal infections (IAIs) who had been admitted to the surgical emergency department in a 1 year period. We divided our patients according to final diagnosis into five groups; the five groups included ; patients with appendicitis (n=200), patients with cholecystitis (n=148),patients with perforated peptic ulcer (n=87), patients with pancreatitis (n=88), patients with diverticulitis (n=18). The most patient’s age range was 26 – 50 years, but In diverticulitis group; It was > 50 years. Females were presented the majority of cases in all studied groups, with male: female ratio (2:3). The five groups were subjected to full history taking and proper clinical examination, routine laboratory investigation, radiological investigations. |
