Abstract

This thesis aims to present a comprehensive overview of the depiction of the mammals in the ancient Egyptian scenes. This is achieved by reviewing the distinctive images of the mammals and the contexts in which they occur. The thesis employs a descriptive- comparative methodology. The descriptive method is seeking to provide details about the main subject of the study ”the mammals” depending on the analysis and interpretation of all the data that were collected about the subject and the scenes, in which the mammals are depicted. The comparative method is applied to discern the differences between the scenes of the Old Kingdom private tombs at Saqqara and the New Kingdom private tombs at Thebes regarding types of mammals, their implications, their forms, their attitudes.
The study comes in three chapters: The first chapter ”Mammals in Daily Life Scenes” discusses the different species of mammals in the daily life scenes of the Old and New Kingdoms including; the scenes of pasture and mammal husbandry, the agricultural scenes, the scenes of marsh-related activities, and the scenes of pet mammals as domestic companions.
The second chapter ”Mammals in Religious and Funerary Scenes” discusses the different species of mammals in the religious and funerary scenes of the Old and New Kingdoms including; the themes of mammal manifestations of the deity, the sacrificial themes, the theme of the procession to the tomb, and the themes of the Opening of the Mouth ritual and the Mortuary service.
The third chapter ”Exotic Mammals in Hunting and Tribute Scenes” deals with all the species of mammals that were represented in the desert hunting scenes and also those that were known and imported from the foreign countries.
The conclusion sums up the results of the study.
