Abstract This is a prospective study carried out on 200 Dyspeptic patients selected from outpatient clinic of El-Minia university Hospital. The goal of our study was to detect the occult celiac disease among patients with dyspeptic symptoms. Patients with non functional dyspepsia were excluded (86 patients) and biopsies were taken for patients with functional dyspeptic symptoms (114 patients). The mean age of our patients was 33.64 ± 10.47; they were 62 (54.4%) males and 52 (50.6%) females. We found that: There are 100 patients with normal villous atrophy, 4 patients with celiac disease (total villous atrophy and high tTG level) and 10 patients with subtotal villous atrophy. There is a statistically significant correlation between villous atrophy and the age group ranging from 14-20y. Bloating as a patient’s complaint has a significant correlation with villous atrophy. There is no statistically significant difference between the subtotal villous atrophy group and the group of celiac disease as regard tTG level, so patients with subtotal villous atrophy and high tTG level are defined to have occult celiac disease with a high probability of those patients to develop overt celiac disease and turning into total villous atrophy. |
