Abstract

Empowerment provides employees with higher degrees of
involvement and greater authority to make decisions on
their own. To create condition for work effectiveness; ensuring
employees access for information, support, opportunities and
resources is necessary.
Organizational commitment reflects a degree of
congruity between workers expectations of the job, and
experience of the job. It expresses the amount of agreement
between these expectations and the rewards the job provides.
Empowered employees feel that they have control over
significant aspects of work and develop increasing feeling of
self-efficacy and appreciation of their abilities and skills.
Self-efficacy has been associated with effective performance.
Additionally, it is generally implicit that an empowered work
place will be more committed and productive.
The present study aimed at identifying the relationship
between nurse teachers’ empowerment and their organizational
commitment through assessing levels of empowerment among
nurse teachers, determining level of organizational commitment
among them and investigating the relationship between
empowerment and organizational commitment among nurse
teachers . The study was conducted at all Secondary Technical Nursing Schools at Elfayoum Governorate. These schools were
affiliated to general administration for technical nursing schools
and institutes at the Ministry of Health. So fifty nurse teachers
who worked in the aforementioned settings and were
responsible for teaching nursing education courses and had one
year experience in nursing education; were eligible to be
included in the study. Data for this study were collected by
using two tools namely; Condition of work Empowerment
Questionnaire (CWEQ) and Organizational commitment scale.
The results of this study have shown the following
findings:
1- Slightly more than half of the studied nurse teachers had
age more than 35 years. Nearly three quarters of the nurse
teachers were married. Regarding level of education,
more than half of study subjects had Nursing diploma
with specialty diploma in teaching methods. 56% of the
studied nursing teachers had more than 10 years of
experience working in their current school. Half of study
subjects attended training course in teaching.
2- Access of support, as source of work empowerment, had got
the highest percent score. On the other hand, access of
resources, as a source of work empowerment, had the
lowest percent score.3- Affective, as a domain of organizational commitment, had
got the highest score. While, the normative, as a domain
of organizational commitment, had the lowest score.
4- There are strong positive relations between total
empowerment and total organizational commitment among
nurse teachers.
Based on the results of this study, it was recommended that:
1- Top management must extend their understanding of the
factors influencing organizational commitment in order to
enhance quality of work life.
2- Nurse teachers should participate in taking decisions
about their work.
3- Facilitating the opportunities of attending programs and
meeting in order to develop knowledge; is necessary.
4- Books and internet services should be available to
increases chance of having more updated knowledge.
5- Increasing access to resources needed for the work; is
necessary.
