Abstract

Giardiasis is considered a serious problem in developing countries and even in developed countries.
This study was intended to detect prevalence of Giardia among school children in Elwasta Beni Suief Governorate.
In the present study, a total of 100 children were examined. They were classified into 2 age groups, (5-8 year) and (9-12 year) of different sex. Every child was subjected to a questionnaire sheet, three stool samples were taken with two days apart. Stool analysis was carried out by different techniques ( direct smear, simple sedimentation method, formalin ether sedimentation method , zinc sulfate floatation method and SAF-ethyl acetate sedimentation). Each stool sample was also stained by Iron haematoxylin stain.
The factors affecting prevalence of Giardia infection were studied since interaction of mainly socioeconomic status, occupational, cultural, personal hygiene and environmental factors are very important in presence or absence of Giardia infection. Also, symptoms associated with Giardia infection were observed and recorded.
The results showed that:
1-The overall prevalence of Giardia infection was (13%) among children in Elwsta, Beni Suief Governorate.
2-Giardia infection was more prevalent among (5-8 year) than (9-12 year) with a rate of (14.3% and 12.1% respectively) and the prevalence among males (17.5%) was higher than the prevalence among females (10%). Comparing the results of prevalence of infection among children (5-8 year) of both sex, it was found that females have more prevalence than males (15.4% and 12.5% respectively) with no significant difference (p=1.000). At age group (9-12 year) males have more prevalence than females (20.8% and 5.9% respectively) with borderline significance (p=0.114).Comparing the results of males of both age groups, it was found that the difference was highely significant . while comparing among females of both age groups,it was borderline significant
3-Social standards had a significant effect on prevalence of Giardia infection. The prevalence among very low class (20%) was higher than low and middle social classes with prevalence rate (13.3%) and (10.0%) respectively.the difference among different classes was statistically significant.
4-The incidence of Giardia infection was more among children who live in rural areas (16.7%) than those who live in semiurban areas (11.4%) with no significant difference (p=0.475).
5-The most common symptom associated with Giardia infection was colic (46.2%) ,then diarrhea (30.8%) then nausea and vomiting (15.4%),then constipation and weight loss (7.7% for each) and
6- (38.5%) from the Giardia infected children were asymptomatic.
