Abstract

This study aimed to : Several species of enteric protozoa are associated with diarrheal illnesses in humans, with some causing severe debilitating illness, especially in immunosuppressed populations Aim of the work : is to detect the enteroparasites most frequently encountered with diarrhea in immunosuppressive therapy recipient patients in Oncology centre of Mansoura University (OCMU) and Mansoura Child Hospital (MHC).
Methodology : a prospective study was carried out on (145) chemotherapy recipient patients suffering from diarrhea in (OCMU), (MHC) and nuclear medicine and radiotherapy department during the period from December 2012 to March 2014. Their ages ranged from 1 year to 70 years old. Fecal specimens were collected and examined by direct smear method, formol-ether concentration technique, and Sheather concentration method. Furthermore special stains for diagnosis of intestinal protozoa was done such as; trichrome staining technique, Modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining, and Modified trichrome stain. In addition Harada Mori filter paper strip culture for diagnosis of Strongloides stercoralis and modified agar method for detection S.stercolaris were done .
Results : intestinal parasitic infection was found in 124 of 145 (85.5%) subjects. Giardia lamblia was the most frequent parasite found (53/145). Multiple parasitic infections was more common than single parasitic infection.
Conclusion : parasitic infections are a public health issue. Results of that study cleared that the commonest intestinal protozoan associated with diarrhea in immunosuppressive therapy recipient were Giar¬dia lamblia (36.6%),followed by Cryptosporidium par¬vum(30.3%) then E. histolytica (27.6%).
