Abstract The predominant cause of infectious corneal blindness in the developed world is Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) infection of the eye (Kaye et al, 2000). HSV is responsible for the development of Herpes Simplex Keratitis (HSK) and has a global incidence of up to 1.5 million people per year including 40,000 cases with severe visual impairment or blindness due to this disease (Farooq and Shukla, 2012). Corneal scarring in recurrent HSK patients is a common sign for corneal transplantation (Yousuf et al, 2004); with graft rejections higher when compared to other common non-herpetic keratitis conditions (Halberstadt et al, 2002). |
