Abstract

Renal scintigraphy can provide the valuable split renal function which is can not be obtained using other non-invasive measurements.
Whole body bone scintigraphy (bone scan) using a 99mTc-labelled pharmaceutical is one of the most commonly performed radionuclide examina tions.
Both the osseous components of the skeletal system as well as the kidneys and bladder are visualized.
This study aims to investigate the feasibility of the assessment of relative renal function with 99mTc-MDP as compared with renal imaging radiotracers 99mTc-DTPA using a gamma camera.
We have used in this study:
1. 99mTc
99mTc is a radioactive tracer that is used in about twenty million medical diagnostic procedures per year.99mTc is radioactive because one or more of the protons and neutrons in its nucleus is in an excited state.
At least 31 radiopharmaceuticals based on 99mTc are used for imaging and studying organs such as the brain, heart muscle, thyroid, lungs, liver, gall-bladder and kidneys, as well as the skeleton, blood and for the investigation of tumors.99mTc decays into 99Tc with a physical half-life T1/2 of 6 hours.
The biological T1/2 for 99mTc is 3 hours, so the effective T1/2 is 2 hours and this makes it particularly well suited to be used in the body.

• 99mTc-methylene diphosphonate (MDP).
• 99mTc-diethylene triamine penta acetic acid (DTPA).
4. Patients
A total of 13 adult patients with malignant tumors were enrolled.
Clear from this study that the assessment of renal function with 99mTc-MDP can be performed incidental to bone scintigraphy and is expected to provide useful information in monitoring renal function.
The early characteristics of renal handling of 99mTc-MDP are sufficiently similar to those of 99mTc-DTPA with the installation of the quantity of radiopharmaceuticals for the two tracers.
So that, accurate estimation of differential (split) renal function are possible with this agent, and that 99mTc-MDP determined renal split with a difference of the quantity of radiopharmaceuticals for the two tracers, and both kidneys were in normal or abnormal.
With reference to T1/2 and Tpeak the results show, which was obtained significant difference between the two tracers.
