Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different dietary fat sources (fish oil, sunflower oil and animal fat) with two antioxidants (Se-vitamin E mix or L-carnitine) on growth performance and carcass traits of Japanese quails. In addition, blood biochemical parameters, meat chemical composition, meat quality tests and economical evaluation of quail diets were also studied.
A total number of 189 unsexed Japanese quail chicks (Coturnix coturnix japonica) one day old which distributed randomly into 7 groups, a control and other six treated groups, each of 27 chicks and assigned to the seven experimental diets. Each group was subdivided into three replicates each of 9 chicks. Basal control and experimental diets were formulated to contain the recommended levels of CP and ME. Birds in the first group were fed ad-libitum on the basal control diet without addition of oils and antioxidants. This group was assigned as a control to which the other treated groups were compared. Chicks in the second, third and fourth groups fed on the experimental diets (D2, D3, D4) containing 3% FO, Sun O and AF and supplemented with 5g vitamin E-Se mix/kg diet. Birds in the fifth, sixth and seventh groups fed on the other three experimental diets (D5, D6, D7) containing the same level of FO, Sun O and AF (3%) but supplemented with 50 mg L-carnitine/kg diet. Each experimental group was treated according to the suggested design going be tested.
