Abstract Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a critical public health and socio-economic problem throughout the world. It is a major cause of death, especially among young adults, and lifelong disability is common in those who survive. Posttraumatic intracranial hemorrhage considered as the most important problem distressing life in severe head injury patients especially those admitted in Neurosurgical ICU.This study includes discussion about types of traumatic brain injuries and postraumatic intracranial hemorrhage types, its diagnosis, management and outcome .Advanced age, initial GCS, mass effect, midline shift,signs of lateralization. skull fractures, post-traumatic intracranial hemorrhage type and location. are the most important factors affecting outcome . This study done for six months in 100 cases from all age and both sex admitted in ICU (severe head injury cases) or neurosurgical department (mild and moderate head injury cases) at Mansoura University Emergency Hospital Patients divided into three groups according to posttraumatic GCS into mild, moderate, severe head injury cases.Patients with brain tumours or ateriovenous malformation and also polytraumatized cases all are excluded from this study .This study explain the potential negative effect of advanced age, low initial GCS, mass effect midline shift ,signs of lateralization, skull fracture and posttraumatic intracranial hemorrhage type on outcome of traumatic brain injuries. |
