Abstract

This prospective randomized study was carried out at the anesthesiology and intensive care department in Minia University Hospital during the period from December 2013 to December 2014 on 60 male and female patients aged 18 to 60 years old with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.
Patients enrolled into the study were divided into 3 equal groups of 20 patients in each group:-
1- Control group (C group): received the standard care and medication of head trauma protocol which include e.g. antibiotics, proton pump inhibitor, dehydrating measures if needed, analgesia, and neuroprotective drugs.
2- Progesterone group (P group): received initial dose of progesterone 1mg /kg I.M every / 12hrs for 5 consecutive days in addition to the standard care and medication of head trauma protocol mentioned above.
3-Combination therapy group (T group): received 0.5 mg/kg progesterone IM 5 days in addition to vitamin D3 1mic I.V daily, enteral omega-3fatty acids 2 grams daily and I.V glutamine 20 grams/12 hrs daily, In addition to the at the standard care and medication of head trauma protocol as mentioned above.
This study aimed to evaluate the mortality and outcome of patients with traumatic brain injury.
