Abstract

Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is the most common type of glaucoma, which is considered chronic, progressive optic neuropathy, accompanied by a characteristic cupping and atrophy of the optic disc, visual field loss, open angle and no obvious systemic or ocular cause. As glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, the main goal of glaucoma management is to diagnose he disease when it is asymptomatic. Visual field tesing is essential in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma. However, it is known that standard perimetry can not detect visual fiel defects until 20% - 40% of ganglion cells have been lost7. Nowadays, retinal nerve fiber defects (RNFL) have been objectively demonstrated earlier than VF defects with new investigative technologies. Measuring RNFL,GCL thickness thickness by OCT enables an objective and quantitative assessment of glaucomatous structural loss. We performed a non-randomized, (observational case control study). Patients with controlled POAG were recruited from the outpatient clinic of Mansoura ophthalmic center. We found that GCL thickness has excellent diagnostic accuracy in diagnosis sever of glaucoma, good in moderate glaucoma and fair in early glaucoma.
