Abstract

Mechanical seals are state of the art when it concerns the sealing of rotating shafts. It protects the medium from external influences and contaminations, and which contribute to preventing leakage and emissions. Fluid film formation between seal face is essential to ensure the lubrication and cooling of seal faces which must be as thin as possible, to reduce the leakage and to restrict wear. Fluid film pressure generating mechanisms are hydrostatic mechanisms and hydrodynamic mechanisms. Mechanical seals are classified by its design or arrangement. Seal flushing is used to promote clean, cool and healthy environment for mechanical seal faces which achieved using many different piping plans, depending on the configuration and the required service. Seal flush systems have many components such as pumping ring, cooler, cyclone separator and barrier/buffer fluid reservoirs which work to improve the efficiency of seal flush systems. Mechanical seal design, arrangement and piping plan are selected according to the operating conditions such as media characteristics, pressure, temperature also reliability and emission concerns must be known. Analyzing of the seal failure and understanding the root cause can lead to extending the seal life by improving seal design and material selection, installation and operating procedures, and environmental control. Discuss five case studies to analyze the root cause of different mechanical seal failures.
