Abstract

In this study, the versatility of the propeller flaps for reconstruction of different soft tissue defects was evaluated. Twenty seven patients were included in this study were undergo reconstruction using propeller flaps. We analyzed the clinical use of these flaps in regards to age, sex, comorbidities, mechanism of injury, indication of coverage, dimensions of the flap and surface area, type of the perforators identified, diameter of the perforator, length of the perforator, angle of rotation, donor site closure, flap thinning, operative time, immediate and late complication, flap survival, complication and postoperative hospital stay, to determine the reliability of this technique.
Data from twenty seven case series s for analysis using Chi-square tests. The peroneal artery perforator (PAP) flaps and posterior tibial artery perforator (PTAP) flaps were the most frequently used flaps. The overall Twenty two cases were completely survived which represents 81.7% of all the flaps. Only three cases of complete flap loss were been reported which represents a total failure rate of 11.1%., two cases of partial flap loss were reported which represents 7.4% of all the flaps. No significant differences were found in complication rate related to etiology or location of the defect, surface area of the flap and arc of rotation. The most common complication was venous congestion. Significant difference was found relating congestion and comorbidities, significant difference between the post-traumatic cases, post burn scar cases and venous congestion. There was significant difference relating congestion to diameter and length of perforator, also to total survival, significant difference on use of leeches and Local anticoagulants on congestion resolution.Pedicled perforator flaps appear to be a reliable and safe procedure for the coverage soft tissue defects based on favorable results reported in the study and literature
