Abstract

Emergency contraceptive pills are important resource with excellent potential to further reduce the number of unwanted pregnancy and abortions. Therefore, this study was aimed at identifying knowledge, attitude, and practice of emergency contraception at Shebin Elkom among mothers and nurses, identifyig barriers to use emergency contraception among mothers, and applying an educational program for nurses and mothers. The design, there were two phases of research design used in the present study; the first phase was a descriptive research design while the second phase was a quasi - experimental research design .The sample, there were two samples first nurses working at maternity department and family planning centers (60 nurse),the second was mothers attending these sites (600).Tools, data were collect using a semi structured an interview questionnaire, questionnaire for assessing the knowledge about emergency contraception, attitude scale and questionnaire about the obstacles for emergency contraception. The settings, the study was conducted at three settings at Menoufiya university hospital, family planning center at Shebien El kom Teaching hospital, and the Maternal and Child Health Center at Shebin El-Kom city. The results: the current study revealed that 73.3% of nurses had deficient knowledge about emergency contraception, 78.3% of nurses had negative attitude toward emergency contraception, 83.5% of mothers had deficient knowledge about emergency contraception 75.5 of mothers had negative attitude toward emergency contraception(p-value <0.001), most of mothers agree that there are many obstacles face them to access emergency contraception. Conclusion there was lack of total knowledge about emergency contraception. Also, there was a negative attitude towards emergency contraception for both nurses and mothers. Recommendation: it is recommended that effort should be directed towards promoting knowledge and attitude of nurses through training courses and continuous educational programs.
