Abstract

This study is to make a comparison between silicone oils 1000cs, 2000cs, and 5000cs as retinal tamponades regarding retinal reattachment, visual outcome, silicone emulsification, and other complications ( increased I.O.P, and cataract development ). This study includes 42 eyes injected with silicone oil (1000 or 2000 or 5000cs.), Patients were divided into 3 groups: Group A: includes 14 eyes in which silicone oil 1000cs. injection through the pars plana approach. Group B: includes 14 eyes in which silicone oil 2000cs. injection through the pars plana approach. Group C: includes 14 eyes in which silicone oil 5000cs. injection through the pars plana approach. Although 1000- and 5000-centistoke silicone oil are similar in terms of surface tension (21.2 dynes/cm and 21.3 dynes/cm, respectively) and specific gravity (0.971 and 0.973, respectively), they differ significantly in terms of molecular weight (25000 and50000, respectively). There are several thesis conducted to show the differences between these viscosities and to compare between these types and new generation (combination tamponades), but they have different chooses and not stable on the best one. It is noted that Silicone oil 1000 has the less visual outcome and the less complications (except emulsification, it emulsified more). Siliconeoil5000 has the best visual outcome and the more complications (except emulsification, it emulsified less). Silicone oil 2000 has good visual outcome and many complications that are midway between the other 2 viscosities.
