Abstract

Through the evaluation of 50 singleton healthy neonates (24 females and 26 males) with gestational age 37-40 weeks, this study was designed to assess and correlate leptin level with birth weight and gender in term neonates.
The study was analytical descriptive study in type and conducted in Ismailia, in obstetrics and gynecology department at Ismailia General Hospital.
All subjects were evaluated by full history taking and examination including anthropometric measures of neonates and maternal BMI. Umbilical cord blood sample for each subject was assessed for leptin level.
The data were collected, revised and summarized then results were tabulated with the final conclusion was:
 leptin levels were detectable in cord blood of enrolled neonates in concentrations ranging from 280– 33600 pg/ml.
 There was no difference in maternal body mass index in both male and female neonates.
 There was no correlation between cord leptin concentrations and maternal body mass index.
 There was no difference in cord blood lepin levels of both male and female neonates.
 There was a positive correlation between cord leptin concentrations and birth weight.
 There was a positive correlation between cord leptin concentrations and birth length, head circumference and skin fold thickness.
 Cord serum leptin concentration in AGA was higher than that for SGA.
 There was a positive correlation between gestational age and cord blood leptin.
 There was no difference in birth weight, length, head circumference, skin fold thickness and ponderal index between male and female neonates.
