Abstract

Fatigue is the most common and incapacitating side effect in
patients with Cancer. Although most cancer patients report that
fatigue is a major obstacle to maintaining normal daily activities
and quality of life, it is seldom assessed and treated in clinical
practice. The aim of the present study was to evaluate cancer- related fatigue according to children with cancer perspectives. Descriptive design was used in the present study with a sample of 125 children diagnosed with cancer at Oncology Unit at Zagazig
University Children Hospital. Five tools were used in this study. The first was a questionnaire interview sheet. The second was the Multidimensional Fatigue Symptom Inventory-Short Form, the third was the cancer fatigue scale, the fourth was Fatigue assessment scale; and the fifth was Multidimensional Assessment
of fatigue scale. The results of the present study revealed that
(72%) of children reported cancer treatment as the main cause of
fatigue. The majority of studied children (93.6%) reported physical fatigue type, moderate fatigue was reported by 71.2% of children, and 93.6% mentioned high score of fatigue interference on daily activities. It could be concluded that children who had cancer were oriented about definition, causes, and degree, as well
as types of fatigue. Moreover, they were oriented about multidimensional aspect of fatigue including fatigue effect on daily living activities. Based on the results, it could be
recommended that in-service trammg programs for nurses directed toward all aspects of Cancer- Related Fatigue should be conducted. Also, an assessment and management of cancer-related Fatigue should be enrolled in daily routine care of cancer children.
