Abstract

Preterm delivery is the most important risk for neonatal morbidity and mortality. The rate of premature has increased by 36% since the early 1980 . Immaturity increases the severity of the clinical manifestations of most neonatal diseases. Immature organ function, complications of therapy, and the specific disorders that caused the premature onset of labor contribute to neonatal morbidity and mortality associated with premature neonates . Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is usually defined as a need for supplemental oxygen at 36 wk after conception . The disease is common in neonates delivered before 32 weeks’ gestation and in those weighting less than 1000 gm . Premature birth and subsequent events (e.g., exposure to oxygen, mechanical ventilation, inflammatory agents, infection) likely shifts the balance from lung development consisting of lung alveolar and vascular growth to one of premature maturation, which is associated with an arrest in development and a loss of future gas exchange area . Angiopoietins are a family of vascular growth factors that play a role in embryonic and postnatal angiogenesis. It is responsible for assembling and disassembling the endothelial lining of blood vessels.
