Abstract

In our study a total of two hundred birds belonging to four species namely chickens, turkeys, ducks, and pigeons. Fifty birds from each species. They were collected from different localities at Sharkia Governorate.
The percentage of positive Chlamydophila psittaci inclusions in smears from the affected organs of chickens ;liver, lungs, heart and spleen were 76%, 50%, 28% and 60% . In ducks the percentages were 60%, 70%, 40% and 56%. In turkeys the percentages were 54%, 20%, 24% and 40%. In pigeons the percentages were 46%, 26%, 10% and 36%.
Chlamydia psittaci was isolated via yolk sac inoculation in 7 day old ECE. The Pathological lesions of inoculated chicken embryos were congestion in the yolk sac membranes and severe engorgement of the blood vessels. Embryo appeared stunted and showed hemorrhagic areas on the head and toes.
Impression smears from yolk sac membranes of infected chicken embryo were stained with Gimenez stain. Chlamydia inclusions were detected in apercentage92%, 88%, 76% and 72% in chickens, ducks, turkey and pigeons respectively.
Direct fluorescence antibody test (DIFT) were done on 12 positive Gimenez stained yolk sac samples and revealed that the high percentage was in chickens (83.3%) followed by turkeys (75%) , ducks in a percentage (66.6%) and pigeons in a percentage (58.3%).
