Abstract

The present study sought to find out whether or not a program based on professional development strategies will be effective in developing some professional skills of prospective teachers of English. Hence, it tested the following main hypothesis: there is a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of EFL prospective teachers in the pre-test and the post-test of professional skills in favor of the latter. Nine third-year students studying at the English Department in Port-Said Faculty of Education were the subjects in the present study. They studied the program in the second term of the academic year 2013- 2014. Four instrument were used: the professional skills questionnaire for Jury members that helped identifying the necessary skills to be included in the professional skills checklist, the assessment portfolio that included the subjects’ scores of application activates during the program, the professionalism satisfaction questionnaire that investigated the effectiveness of the program from the subjects’ point of view ; and the pre-post test of professional skills that measured the subjects’ level before and after the treatment. The results of the study revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of prospective teachers in the pre-post test of professional skills in favor of the post test verifying the study hypothesis.
