Abstract

This cohort prospective study was done in NICU of Pediatric Department, Zagazig University Hospital. One hundred and five neonates were admitted to NICU during six month period and were examined, fifteen were excluded as they fit exclusion criteria another 5 were CMV seropositive. The study included 85 initial CMV seronegative patients, 15 of them were lost during the period of study ( 12 died and 3 lost follow up). All patients were subjected to complete history taking , physical examination, laboratory investigation including CBC, LFTs and CMV IgM by ELISA and NICU events recording as exposure to sepsis, period of stay, blood transfusion and other procedures.
Our result showed that
Incidence of CMV seroconversion from negative to positive after admission in ZU-NICU was 11.4%
CMV infection tend to occur in neonate with low birth weight and with prolonged NICU stay.
CMV infection lead to significant decrease in hemoglobin level & also significant increase in ALT level and is associated with hepatosplenomegaly.
There is highly significant increase in CMV risk in neonate under breast feeding, blood transfusion & central venous access as incidence of CMV infection in neonate exposed to these factors is about 6, 10 and 11 times incidence of CMV infection in neonate not-exposed to these factors respectively.
