Abstract Androgens play an important roles in male sexual differentiation and maintenance of libido, in addition to regulating body composition, erythropoiesis, and osteoporosis (Shahidi, 2001; Pope Jr and Kanayama, 2012). Androgens deficiency is characterized by many symptoms like reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, increased visceral fat mass and loss of muscle mass. It represent also a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease (Basaria and Dobs, 2007).Present study aimed mainly to illustrate the potential of testosterone administration as protective agent for cardiovascular system in experimental rats. For such reason rats were subjected to castration and then left for extra time to achieve blood testosterone depletion. Certain biomarkers were selected to evaluate the metabolic changes in subsequent to castration and mainly are plasma fibrinogen, serum glucose, insulin, CRP, IL-6, endothelin-1, lipogram pattern andfree testosterone.Administration of testosterone in three dose level was done later to the castrated rats and results of the selected biomarkers were recorded. This may illustrate the potential of testosterone to restore normal level of these biomarkers and to figure out the specific dose which achieve maximum therapeutic effect. |
