Abstract

The present study aims to give information about the different biological parameters of Bagrus bayad (Forskal, 1775) and Bagrus docmac (Forskal, 1775), belonging to the family Bagridae in Muess Channel of Sharkia Province, Egypt.
This study revealed that the Morphometeric measurements which were directly proportional to total length, and also the length- weight relationships were curvilinear for both species. The relationship between total fish length and vertebral radius is described by straight line equations: L = 6.714 + 13.88 V and L = 8.841 + 10.7 V for both species respectively.
Histological observation of gonads during the spawning season declared 6 stages of maturity. And the length at first maturity was found to be 54, 57, 53 and 58cm for male and female B. bayad and B. docmac respectively, Fecundity of the female was determined and its relation with the length and weight was discussed for both species. Measuring the egg diameter has indicated the nature of partial spawning of both species.
Finally, the most important food item was found to be Tilapia larvae for both species under study. The relation between feeding intensity and fish length was examined. The ecological study for Muess Channel waters (the site of sample collection) found that heavy metal levels were higher than the international legal limits which insures that it is a polluted area.
