Abstract

Research utilization involves a learning process engaging attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Poor or inconsistent research utilization into clinical practice is a major problem for recent nursing practice, lead to misinterpretation with how best to foster the uptake of research into nursing practice. Thus the aim of this study was to analyze the nurse’s perceptions of barriers to research utilization at Zagazig University Hospitals using a descriptive study design. A survey of all nurses (146) nurses, who met.the study criteria, were selected. The BARRIERS to research utilization scale was used to fulfill the purpose of this study. The study nurses demographic data were collected, also the nurse’s attitude toward research utilization were assessed. The study presented that, the greatest barriers as perceived by the study subjects were the organizational barriers as, administration will not allow implementation (88.4%) of research findings, there is insufficient time on the job to implement new ideas (85.6%) and the nurse does not feel she/he has enough authority to change patient care procedure (84.9%). This study also identifies constraints that require to be overcome for clinical nurses to actively get involved in research utilization. It can be concluded that, the organizational barriers were the most common barriers to research utilization among nurses working in Zagazig University Hospitals. Based on the findings of the present study, it can be recommended that, hospital policy should update and facilitate the improvement in nursing education and performance; continuing education unit should be available to train nurses to increase their knowledge and improve their skills.
