Abstract

Urinary incontinence is one of potential complication of transurethral resection of the prostate and radical prostatectomy. Urinary incontinence is Hospital over a basic nursing care issue so nurses must be more creativ e, inventive and bold in developing new approaches to prevent and manage urinary incontinence Smith (2010) . A descri ptive research design was conducted in Urology and Nephrology center at Mansoura Univer sity
period of six months (119/2009 - 28/2/2010). This study aimed to estimate the incidence of urinary incontinence among post prostatectomy patients, assess nurses’ knowledge regarding unnary incontinence post prostatectomy and assess nurses’ performance regarding nursmg management of patients with urinary incontinence post prostatectomy. The study sample composed of 47 female nurses employed in urology departments and 144 adult male patients had prostatectomy over a period of six months. Three tools were used for data collection; I: Patient Assessment Sheet. IT: Nurses’ knowledge Questionnaire sheet. III: Nurses’ Performance Checklist sheet. The results of present study concluded that: the incidence of urinary incontinence post prostatectomy was 16. More than half of nurses (57%) had satisfactory level of total know ledge and about two thirds of nurses (65%) had inadequate level of performance regarding the nursing management of patients with urinary incontinence post prostatectomy. This study recommended that educational program should be developed. Appraisal of staff nurses should be implemented.
