Abstract

Vaginal yeast infections are very common, affecting up to 75% of women at some point in life. And almost half of women have two or more vaginal yeast infections . The epidemiologic data on candida vulvo vaginitis, a non reportable disease, are incomplete. Prevalence estimates rely mainly on self-reported histories of diagnosis by a physician. The aim of the current study was to determine the effectiveness of sodium bicarbonate among women suffering from vaginal yeast infection by the following objectives: 1-To identify risk factors for vaginal yeast infection 2-Evaluate the effect of sodium bicarbonate in early management and improvement of vaginal yeast infection. 3- Assess the mothers knowledge about herbal remedies used to improve vaginal yeast infection This study was conducted at the Maternal and child health center at Tala city. Any woman attending MCH center was eligible for recruitment in the sample if she fulfilled the inclusion criteria of being suffered from vaginal yeast infection that confirmed by clinical diagnosis, women who have high risk factors of yeast vaginal infection. The tools used in data collection were designed by the researcher and these included three main parts :- First Part :- Sociodemographic data: recorded data about the following: age, education level, occupation and marital status Medical and surgical history: such as renal disease, liver disease, blood disease, rheumatic heart disease, respiratory disease, gynechological disease, diabetes, skin disease and hypertension. Obstetric history: such as number of pregnancies, number of deliveries, number of abortions, number of live birth, space between pregnancy, pregnancy complication and type of feeding such as age of menarche, menstrual irregularities and menstrual characteristics. Family planning history: such as family planning method, duration of use and family planning method complication. Clinical manifestation of vaginal yeast infection: such as dysparunia, dysuria, vaginal itching, burning sensation, sever lower abdominal pain and characteristics of vaginal discharge such as color, amount, odor and thickness. Assessment of risk factors of vaginal yeast infection: such as vaginal douching, wearing tight underwear, taking antibiotic, eating spicy foods and drinking tea and coffee, using cosmetics hygiene, wearing under wear with industrial fiber and using oral contraceptive pills. Second Part :- Assessment of women’s knowledge about vaginal yeast infection such as definition, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and most common home remedies used for treatment of vaginal yeast infection. Third Part :- Evaluate effectiveness of sodium bicarbonate in treatment of vaginal yeast infection such as regular use, duration, time of improvement, side effects and women’s satisfaction. Follow up to evaluate effectiveness of treatment such as who make follow up ,regarding make vaginal examination and result of examination . Comparison between case and control group regarding treatment. Human rights and ethical considerations were observed and considered in conducting the study. The purpose of the study explained to each woman in the sample, The researcher approached each woman , giving her an over view of the study. Before inclusion in the study sample, each woman gave her oral informed consent to participate in the present study, she was informed that participation in the study is voluntary, and that she could withdraw from the study whenever she decides to. Total confidentiality of obtained information, as well as respect of the subject’s privacy was ensured . The main study finding are - There was statistically significant differences between case and control group regarding treatment - More over, comparison of the women’s knowledge before and after management in the study sample revealed that, there was statistically significant improvement in all knowledge items (p<0,001). - The majority of the women in the study sample in rular area. - The majority of the women in the study sample their age ranged from 31-40years.(pre menopausal women). - The majority of the women in the study sample using vaginal douching, taking antibiotics, taking oral contraceptive pills, wearing tight under wear with industrial fibers and using perfumed cosmotics product.
