Abstract
The present study deals with the microbiostratigra- phic, stratigraphic and microfacies results arrived at through detailed studies of pollen grains, spores, plan- ktonic foraminifera and microlithofacies analyses of core and ditch samples representing the Cretaceous succession of Betty Well No.1, Northern Western Desert, Egypt.
The Cretaceous section of Betty Well No.1, which forms the scope of the present study, represents a part of the ideal sequence at the northern part of the Western Desert, where the penetrated strata follow each other from top to base: Recent, Oligo-Miocene, Eocene, Upper Cretaceous, Lower Cretaceous and Jurassic unconformably overlying the Paleozoic strata with a total encountered depth of 14,643 feet. The well was drilled by the Sahara Petroleum Company during 1956 and abandoned as a dry hole.
LOCATION:
The Betty Well is located to the east of the Qattara Depression (Latitude 29 40 08 N and Longitude 27 26 45 E) about 200 Kms. south of Mersa Matruh and 100 Kms. east of Gibb Afia Well No.1, Northern Western Desert, Egypt (Text-Figure 1). The well starts at an elevation of -13 mts. below sea level.
