Abstract

The thesis focus on continuity of service delivery of data as MN undergoes a vertical handover process between Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks. Despite these networks belong to IEEE 802 standard; they work according to different protocols in the data link layer. Mobility management protocols e.g. (MIP v4/6, NEMO, FHMIP) allow the service connection of the nodes to remain while moving around in internet. This thesis makes a comparative study between mobility protocols in both homogeneous and heterogeneous networks. (F-HMIPV6) protocol gives the best results among other mobility protocols and reduced packet losses and handover delays by reducing registration and DAD time.IEEE802.21 MIHF services that reside between L2 and the IP layer optimize the handover procedures in Mobile IP (MIP) protocol and its extension protocols. Media Independent Handover (MIH) makes intelligent handover decisions in MIP by introducing an ‘Information Element Container’ to store static and dynamic Layer 2 (L2) and Layer 3 (L3) information of neighboring access networks so reducing the anticipation time in MIP. All mobility protocols were integrated with the IEEE 802.21 to provide better handover efficiency and to reduce the handover delay and possible packet loss during handover .The Simulators used here are OPNET and NS2 simulators
