Abstract

Diabetes appears to be a global health problem. It is estimated that, the developing countries will bear the brunt of diabetes epidemics in the 21th century especially Eastern Mediterranean Region. The transition to urban environment and greater economic affluence has been associated with changes in physical activity and dietary patterns that have promoted the prevalence of diabetes mellitus.
The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose in Cohort of adult Egyptian population living at Kafr eldawar city, Behera Governorate.
This study included 500 adult subjects ≥20 years of age regardless of whether he or she had diabetes. These subjects were selected at random by taking roughly one house every 10 houses, they were asked for information on age, sex, place of residence, family history of diabetes, hypertension, and for women history of GDM.
Blood pressure was measured. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) samples were taken after overnight fasting for at least 8 hours up to 14 hours. The cut-off points for diagnosis of diabetes mellitus and impaired fasting glucose were taken according to ADA recommendations in 2012.
from the results of the present study, we can conclude the followings:
1. The overall prevalence of diabetes mellitus was found to be 15.2% and that of impaired fasting glucose 7% in adult subjects ≥20 years of age living at Kafr AL-Dawar city, Behera Governorate.
2. Distribution of diabetic cases according to the type of diabetes was 9 patients had typel DM (11.85%) and 67 patients had type2 DM (88.15%).
3. The prevalence of both diabetes mellitus increased with age, the percentage of diabetes mellitus rose to 34.2% in those aged 50-59 years.
4. The prevalence of the previously known diabetics was 13% (65 cases) and the newly discovered diabetics 2.2% (11 cases).
5. Family history of diabetes mellitus was 13.8% in the total 500 studied subjects, 52.7% of total 76 diabetic patients and 25.8% of total 35 impaired fasting glucose cases.
