Abstract

In recent years, the problem of sewage pollution of Alexandria Coastal waters has become a point of national concern. Signs of this kind of pollution has already been observed in the last few years along the shores of Alexandria. Admittedly, the disposal of the untreated sewage, even in the open sea, may be harmful concerning its possible hygienic and aesthetical effects and its impact on fauna and flora in the marine environment. The effect is directly proportional to the quantity and quality of the sewage discharged and the capacity of the environment to assimilate, degrade and disperse these allochthonous pollutants. Over of untreated sewage and waste waters are discharged annually into the coastal water of Alexandria through several sewers, distributed along the coast. Out of this amount, about are discharged into the Eastern Harbor of Alexandria through several out falls This quantity is about times the water volume of this basin. Furthermore, due to local water circulation, the receives an additional amount of sewage polluted water from the main sewage situated in its vicinity and which discharges.
