Abstract The attachment and subsequent growth of algae on artificial submerged structures as well as on natural sub- strata have previously received little attention along the Egyptian lediterranean coast, These attached microalgae represent necessary food items for certain fishes and play an active role as important fouling components. According to the life habitat of diatoms, they can be divided into two main categories, namely; planktonic (free floating ) and littoral forms. These littoral diatons are either motile and glide on the bottom (Benthic) or at- ach themselves to plants (Epiphytic) or any inorganic sub- strata (Lithophytic). Some littoral diatoms exist in the plankton, but only for certain time ( Tychopelegic). Many investigations were carried out in the Medit- erranean concerning the seasonal occurrence of epiphytic iatoms grown on submerged structures, in particular to Blass slides Ferguson-wood, Patrick Castenholz studied also the deve- Smyth, Castenholz, Sladeckova, lopment of diatoms on glass slides in Norwegian coasts. Iuchini reported the diatoms developed on some artificial substratum (glass slides) and natural ones (quartz stones). |
