Abstract

To evaluate the frequencies of symptomatic complications of double J ureteral stents and to asses the effect of double J insertion on daily activities and quality of life of patients presented to outpatient clinics of faculty of medicine Zagazig University.
Materials and methods :
Fifty stented adult patients were evaluated after one month of stenting or upon presentation by history taking with emphasis on urologic and stent symptoms, examination, urine analysis and cultures, KUB ,ultrasound and other investigations to detect stent complication. The quality of life was evaluated according to visual analogue scale of pain or Wong Baker face scale and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). All patients were interviewed after 2 weeks of stent removal and asked about relief of the symptoms. Results are presented in the form of tables .

The stent dwelling time was between 2 weeks and 10 months with the mean is 3.74 months and the SD=3.30. Urine analysis, after one month, showed that 66 % of patient had significant puria and 60 % 0f patients had microscopic haematuria.KUB showed migrated stent in 3 cases and neglected stent was present in 4 patients with excess encrustation. Pyonephrosis and blocked stent occured in 2 cases. According to IPSS, 24% of patients mild symptoms,74% of patients moderate while 2% Severe symptoms. 52% of patients suffered from moderate to severe dysuria and 30 % experienced attacks of macroscopic haematuria. 88 % of patients complained from ipsilateral loin pain while 10 % of patients complained from attacks of fever that indicated infection. 24 patients (48%) experienced affection of their daily activities due to stent symptoms.
Conclusion:
Routine placement of stents after uncomplicated ureteroscopy for or ureteric surgery is unnecessary. Moreover, it might be unadvisable because stent related symptoms may have negative impact on quality of life of the patient.
