Abstract

Urinary TWEAK levels were significantly higher in SLE patients with active LN compared to those with inactive nephritis subjects (P<0.001).
A statistically significant positive correlation (P<0.001) was found between uTWEAK levels and rSLEDAI scoring systems.
A statistically significant positive correlation was found between uTWEAK levels ESR (p<0.001)
A statistically significant positive correlation was found between uTWEAK levels and 24 urinary proteins (p<0.001).
A statistically significant negative correlations were found between uTWEAK levels and C3 ((p=0.0491) ) and C4(p=0.001) , respectively.
uTWEAK levels showed significantly positive correlation with the histological renal activity index (p=0.001). However, there was no significant correlation between uTWEAK levels and chronicity index of renal biopsy (p=.278).
There was no significant correlation between uTWEAK levels and WBC count, platelets level, AST and ALT
There was no significant correlation between uTWEAK levels and the demographic data of the patients e.g. age and disease duration.
UTWEAK showed sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 75% for the presence of active LN.
Urinary TWEAK may play a central role in the pathogenesis of LN.
Urinary TWEAK is able to discriminate lupus renal activity.
Urinary TWEAK is a sensitive biomarker for early detection of active lupus nephritis.
