Abstract

In this study, the immunomodulatory activity of thymol and its interaction with cytokines gene expression was investigated in 15 New Zealand rabbits as a model for lab animals. The rabbits were divided to 5 groups, the first group was inoculated with saline I/P as negative control, the second group was inoculated I/P with thymol only 10% (thymol watery solution) with a dosage of 3ml for each animal. The third group was inoculated I/P with thymol + surfactant with a dosage of 3ml for each animal. Forth group was inoculated I/P with protein A with a dosage of 30μg/ animal. Fifth group which was previously I/P inoculated with thymol + surfactant three successive days before experiment day was then inoculated with protein A with a dosage of 30μg/ animal. Blood samples were collected from each group at first week with certain time course, at hours 3, 12, 24, 48, and on the 7th day post infection for the detection of the gene expression of IL-1β, IL-10 and TNF-α, the obtained results showed that:
I. Thymol can neutralize staphylococcal protein A:
■ Thymol revealed anti inflammatory effect against staphylococcal protein A.
II. Challenge test:
■ Challenge test, performed on control and thymol watery solution treated animals after samples of gene expression taken, revealed that thymol succeeded to protect rabbits from S.aureus and help in limitation of S.aureus growth in rabbits organs.
