Abstract

SUl.Lii.ARY
A study was Ctrried out for the purpose of investigating
tee effect of certain pesticides, which were cotoran herbicide,
,,~th Temik and Disyston insecticides and ceresan fungicide,
o11 plant growth and absorption of some nutritional clements
by cotton seedlings grown in sand culture. calcium nitrate,
superphosphate and potassium sulfate together with needed
microele.nents were added to growth media of plants.
Obtained results revealed the followings
l, A depressive effect was observed on the percent g<;nuinhtion
ol seeds treated with all applied pe:oticides in spite of the
relatively favourable effect of ceresan obtained under the
::onc\i ti.ons of the fi rEt year of study possibly due to the low
co1centrations used at that season,
Dry iuatter content of plants was found to be decreased at
hi!’L concentration of apnlied pesticides; for plants ecrown
urdcr low rates, however, the pesticide effect had a tendency
to be relatively f2vourable. Variations were obtained for the
crtect of added Desticides on the different tested organs.
b. relatively more sensitivity seemed to be occurred for the
roots of cotton seedlinrs as com~ared to their shoots.
3, Tbe total carbohydrate content of cotton plants was depressed
in plants supplied with cotoran and ceresan, This was suggested
cc oe mainly due to the effect of pesticide on the
Gctivities of both phobosynthesis and respiration processes.
used insecticides, on the other ho.nd, seemed to be favourable
pcrtic:ulcrly when applied at high doses possibly due to their
8i tects on the enzyme activity,
’’• The uptake of nitrogen was generallY favoured with applic
tion of low concentrations of cotoran which was, however,
inhibiting at reletively high added levels. Depressions were

A conclusion could be deduced that the action of pesti
