Abstract

The present study shows a statistically significant difference in fingerprint ridge densities of males and females. The mean value of the fingerprint ridge density in right hand of females was 17.73 ± 1.69 .and that of left hand was 17.74± 1.73.while for both hands was 17.74 ± 1.63
The mean value of the fingerprint ridge density in right hand of males was 14.82 ± 1.52 .and that of left hand was 15.22 ± 1.32 .while for both hands was 15.02 ± 1.33.
There are nearly 3 ridges difference (higher in females) for the right hand, around 2.5 ridges difference for the left hand and 2.7 ridges difference for both hands. This means that there were highly significant differences between ridge density for all these comparisons.
The ring finger showed the highest difference between males and females in the right hand. while, the little finger showed the highest difference in the left hand.
A mean fingerprint ridge density of 16.15 is the most accurate cut point to differentiate females from males, This means that fingerprint ridge density of 15 ridges/25 mm2 or less is more likely to be of males. Likewise a mean ridge count of more than 16 ridges/25 mm2 is more likely to be of female origin. Thus the study confirms that females have greater ridge density, hence finer ridge details, than men.
The mean ridge densities thus, can be used as a presumptive indicator of gender of an unknown print left at a crime scene also as a method of identification for mutilated bodies .
The results of the study are quite encouraging and this ultimately would be helpful as a useful tool for the fingerprint experts either in the field of Forensic Science or law enforcement field. In fact, the aim of conducting the study was to help the authorities concerned to minimize or restrict their field of investigation on a particular gender
The study confirms the observations of earlier researchers. Further studies on fingerprint ridge density in individual fingers and different population groups are proposed.
