Abstract

High quality nursing care is desired by patients and promised by nurses. Measures of patient’s satisfaction were found to correlate directly with treatment compliance, nursing quality and outcome of care. Patients receiving chemotherapy and their families need to understand that changes in quality of life may occur within the course of chemotherapy. The purpose of study was to assess quality of provided nursing care and level of satisfaction for patient under chemotherapy treatment at the National Cancer Institute, Cairo University. An exploratory descriptive design was utilized in the current study. All patients admitted to the chemotherapy unit at National Cancer Institute, Cairo University for one month were included in the studyaccording to criteria 68 patients and 12 nurses were the sample of the study. Data were collected by two tools; 1- Observation checklist to assess quality of nursing care was developed by the investigator after reviewing related literature, 2-Patient satisfaction questionnaire about provided nursing care. Study results showed that majority of nurse sample were females and graduated from technical institute of nursing, the most nursing care provided to oncology patient was in morning shift. Also a lot of nurses did not perform complete physical assessment and not wear complete personal protective equipment. Majority of patients study sample were between strong and very strong agreement satisfied with nursing care provided to them during chemotherapy administration, there was a relationship between educational level and experience and quality of care. The study recommendation that: The national cancer institute should establish center for education and training for all health team, patients and their families. The head nurse should inform the education center about their educational needs periodically after assessment these needs. Psychosocial therapist should be available at the patient’s unit during the three shifts to prepare and adapt the patient about their new figure after chemotherapy administration.
