Abstract

This study aimedto improve self-care among diabetic patients in family medicine centers in Port Said city, it was a descriptive cross sectional study and a modified semi structured questionnaire was conducted to 228 diabetic patients to be self-administered in El-Manakh - Othman EbnAfan and El-Kuwait family medicine centers in Port Said city.
According to the results of the current study the most common comorbid conditions with diabetes mellitus was hypertension, the most common diabetic complication wasperipheral neuritis followed by diabetic retinopathy and the least common was blindness and diabetic coma and doctors were the major source of knowledge and information for the diabetic patients.
Most of the diabetic patients didn’t follow their self-care program in an accepted manner,the most followed program in the self-care was taking treatment of diabetes regularly in an accepted manner and there is relation between income and self-care and also between work status and self-care.
The most frequent barrier to self-care was difficulty in following recommended exercise, and the least frequent barrier was poor adherence to medications.Self-care was mostly affected by difficulty in following recommended exercise followed by low education level followed by difficulty in following recommended dietary plans and annual investigation.
