Abstract Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease characterized by recurrent unprovoked epileptic seizures. Epileptic seizure is a transient occurrence of signs and/or symptoms due to abnormal excessive synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. Epilepsy is a common disease affecting about 50 million people worldwide. The average annual incidence of epilepsy is about 55 per 100,000 populations. The prevalence of epilepsy as a major public health problem worldwide is estimated to be 0.5-1 %. Epilepsy is the most common neurological disorder of adolescence. Epilepsy in adolescence is a significant neurologic burden with a prevalence of 1.5–2%. Adolescence is a time of dramatic change in growth and hormonal changes. Puberty appears to exert an influence on epilepsy, although the exact relationship between hormonal changes in puberty and seizures is probably complex. |
