Abstract

Two field experiments were carried out at El- Bostan Protected Cultivation Experimental Station, during the two successive summer seasons in 2012 and 2013. This study was performed in four single type net houses to investigate the effect of shading at different shade densities i.e., 40, 60 and 73% and irrigation regime at 80,100 and 120% of water requirements and their interaction on climatic factors, vegetative growth, flowering behavior as well as fruit yield and its quality of tomato plants F1 V.T.916 grown under sandy soil condition. Obtained results revealed that all shading treatments markedly reduced both minimum and maximum air temperature, radiation and soil temperature, meanwhile it increased both maximum and minimum relative air humidity under greenhouse condition compared with unshaded treatment. Shading plants with 73% density and irrigated with any of used irrigation regimes (80,100 or 120%of water requirements) enhanced all vegetative growth measurements (plant height, leaves number per plant, fresh and dry weight of leaves, stem and whole plant) and increased all assayed chemical constituents of plant leaves i.e. chlorophyll, total nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as total carbohydrates contents. Moreover, such as it improved positively the studied. Flowering behavior decreased the number of days elapsed from transplanting to flowering and increased the number of clusters/plant and the number of flowers and fruits/ cluster as well as fruit set percentage. Also it increased the total fruit yield and its components i.e., number of fruits per plant and average fruit weight, early and marketable fruit yield as well as total produced fruit yield. Physical and chemical fruit properties were also improved .Economically, it can be recommended to use the less water regime (80%) with the highest shading density (73%) in order to get optimum yield with saving water.
