Abstract

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health, and classified according to Body mass index to Overweight ,Obese )Obese class I ,Obese class II and Obese class III( . an escalating global epidemic of overweight and obesity – “globesity” – is taking over many parts of the world
Aetiopathogenesis of obesity is multi- factorial but The fundamental cause is an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. health consequences of obesity range from increased risk of premature death to serious chronic conditions that reduce the overall quality of life .
Evaluation of obese patient byHolistic approach (Bio-psycho – social) to determine the way of proper management . we should screen all adults for obesity, and concentrate on prevention of obesity .
Once a proper evaluation and risk assessment is complete, a weight-loss program tailored to the patient’s weight-loss goals and level of motivation should be implemented.
primary care physicians has a great role in management of obesity they can counsel their patients using behavioral and motivational techniques.
Any successful weight-loss program should include dietary guidelines and an exercise regimen to help during weight maintenance. Behavioral therapy is effective when used in combination with lifestyle modifications. For patients who cannot achieve or maintain the desired weight loss, anti obesity drug therapy should be considered. When choosing a drug therapy, risks of the medication should be weighed against the benefits that may result from the expected weight loss.
