Abstract The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of using a program of verbal communication strategies on acquisition and use of these strategies at first year secondary school students. Based on literature review, related studies and a panel of jury members’ points of view, a list of thirteen verbal communication strategies was proposed and used as the most needed strategies to first year secondary students. A quasi research design was used and an experimental study depended on the voluntary basis of choosing the groups of the study, which consisted of (30) students in the experimental group and (30) students in the control group from Elwan Secondary school, Assiut Education directorate .Pre testing of the dependent variables was conducted before the experiment. The experimental group was trained through the verbal communication strategies program, while the control group didn’t receive such training. The researcher developed and used the following tools: a verbal communication strategies program including a teacher’s guide and a students’ handbook ,a pre-post verbal communication strategies acquisition test and a pre-post verbal communication strategies use test The program was taught to students in a six-week period. Paired t- test program was used to measure the effect of the training program on the students’ acquisition and use of verbal communication strategies .Results revealed that the program was effective in developing first year secondary school students’ verbal communication strategies’ acquisition and use Discussion of these findings , recommendations and suggestions for further research were presented .
