Abstract

One of the disadvantages of the CWU mastoidectomy in the treatment of middle ear Cholesteatoma is a fairly high recurrence rate.
Many authors have discussed the relationship between the presence of even minimal loss of substance of the outer attic wall (either because the surgical procedure or the disease itself) and development of retraction pockets and recurrent cholesteatoma.
Different reports have produced evidence of the relevant role of scutumplasty in the prevention of recurrent disease. However, the reconstruction of attic defects should be considered a fundamental step when performing CWU mastoidectomy.
The ideal material for scutumplasty should be easy to handle, available, stable over an extended period, resorption and retraction resisting, tolerated and cheap.
This study was carried on 10 patients diagnosed as chronic otitis media unsafe type with attic involvement. Patients underwent CWU mastoidectomy with Transmeatal atticotomy and attic repair using glass Ionomer bone cement.
In our study, the use of glass Ionomer bone cement as a reconstruction material of the lateral attic wall showed that glass Ionomer cement considered being a promising material to be used in lateral attic wall reconstruction. With minimal postoperative complication, it gives the otological surgeons a reliable material for lateral attic wall reconstruction.
