Abstract

Numerous scoring systems are available, In this study, 100 trauma patients were
evaluated using TRISS methodology for the severity of injury and outcome.
1. The RTS ranged from 2-7.8. There was a graded increase in mortality with
decreasing RTS score.
2. There was a graded increase in mortality with increasing ISS scores.
3. The TRISS index also revealed similar probability of survival as expected from above values.
4. Definitive analysis of TRISS revealed Z values of 1.001, W 1.77, and M5. Comparison of RTS, ISS and TRISS by the PER method showed that ISS
gave the poorest gain in information, while RTS and TRISS werecomparable.
6. Comparable performances of the RTS, ISS, and TRISS again showed ISS as
the poorest index, while the results of RTS and TRISS were comparable.
7. Our W statistic was 1.77 implied that 1.77 patients in each 100 patients
managed at our hospital survived in excess the predicted number
Based on our study, TRISS is an effective method for predicting survival of injury victims and hence the trauma care received. Our study documents some potential benefits of using Trauma Scoring systems however with a caution as we used a relatively small sample size from one hospital over a short time interval. General recommendations cannot be made until further studies is present
Also Consistent with our results, it has been reported that there was a positive correlation between TRISS value increase and the mortality rate of traumatized
patients,, it can be used for making judgments as to whether the traumatic injury was a life threatening one or not.A positive correlation has been established between these measures and death. BUT besides all limitations, TRISS method still remains the most used method in trauma outcome studies...TRISS method has proven to have an important role in
trauma care research. But further studies are needed to confirm these findings and to make adaptation of trauma scores according to the traditional criteria for
decision making on whether the injury is a life threatening one.
